Introduction:

Hi and welcome. There aren't many places left on Earth which man has not set foot, and the wild areas that have yet to be explored are disappearing rapidly. But still there are creatures out there, who share the planet with us that have yet to be identified by science. One such discovery was the 'okapi' a short neck giraffe living in the Congo forest. This creature was discovered only a 100 years ago. Something more recent was the 'Vu Quang ox' found on the Vietnam-Laos border back in 1992. So it is possible that monsters like the Loveland Frog or the Mokele-Mbembe are just creatures waiting to be discovered by man and modern science. If you have had any encounters with something strange yourself? Please send in your stories here.

The Dover Demon:

This bizarre creature that has become known of the Dover Demon has never really been identified. At 3ft or 4ft tall, a thin body, with long thin arms, legs, and fingers. The creature had no visible mouth or nose, this description was given by all the witnesses who saw the Dover Demon. It was back in April 1977, Dover, Massachusetts, USA.

Three teenagers were driving at night along a road when one of the friends, 17-year old Bill Bartett noticed a weird creature in the car headlights. Thinking at first this was maybe a cat or dog, though on closer look of the features soon realised this wasn't so. While his sighting of the this strange beast lasted only for a brief period. He was still able to give an accurate description and when he returned home immediately sketched a picture of what he encountered earlier that night. Unfortunately the two friends accompanying him did not see the creature. But young Billy was not the only person to catch a sighting of the Dover Demon.

John Baxer who was 15 years old at the time of his encounter. Which took place just a mere mile away from the original Bartlett sighting. John Baxter saw someone walking towards him on the same side of the road. Thinking this was one of his friends, he called out. He waited for the replay but there was none. As he got closer the creature stopped and took off down into the woods. John ran after the creature and saw it grasping a tree with its long slender fingers. The description John gave was very similar to the Billy Bartett sighting with the same brightly coloured eyes and long limbs. Other people also witnessed the Dover Demon around the same time, all reporting a bizarre creature with a large head, slender limbs, and bright large eyes in the same area. These encounters and descriptions given match the same as the ones given by Billy and John. So where did the Dover Demon come from? And was a intelligent being or merely a lost and confused pet of a greater intelligence?

El Chupacabras:

Back in the mid-90's on the island of Puerto Rico some 1,000 miles off the coast of Florida. A mysterious plague struck the island causing the death of hundreds of animals, nothing was safe! Cattle, poultry, pets, all were being found dead with 1 or 2 small puncture wounds, drained of all their blood. The Chupacabras which translated from the Spanish means 'goatsucker' was thought responsible for the deaths. Although the cases connected to the Chupacabras do stretch back as far as the 1970's. The mainstream media didn't catch on to the phenomenon till 1995 when there was a massive increase in strange deaths of live stock.

The Goatsucker got its name from its earliest attacks when dozens of goats were found dead with small puncture marks on their necks drained of their blood. The Chupacabras has a tube-like projection from its mouth which it uses to extract the blood. One such incident happened on Friday, 15 December, 1995, by now the Chupacabras is responsible for at least 1000 deaths of cattle, cats, dogs, sheep, rabbits, and chickens. Soon after this a Siamese cat was found dead with a small puncture hole though the skull.

The Chupacabras is believed to live deep in the caves which stretch all though Puerto Rico and run deep underground. And was also believed to have been connected to the UFO activity in the area. Puerto Rico is also a very mountainous island, with a very large rainforest. These two factors alone make an excellent place for such a creature to hide. Reports of attacks came from all over the island from Aericibo, Mayeguez, Canovannas, and Dorado. Sometimes along with the extreme blood loss the Chupacabras victims suffered the loss of internal organs. Panic soon spread and people grew increasingly frightened with all the unexplained deaths.

The mayor of Puerto Rico soon organised a expedition to try and capture the creature but the adventure was unfortunately unsuccessful. At this time the Chupacabras diet consisted only of animals and had not attacked any humans. This did not last if the following story is be believed. In February of 1996 a man and his wife were driving at night through a part of El Yungue. Suddenly their car stalled and when they got out to try and solve the problem the woman was attacked by a unknown beast. The husband immediately leapt to her aid and the creature ran off. She was taking to hospital and treated for her wounds. So out of all the dozens and dozens of police officers, farmers, and local citizens who claim to have seen the Chupacabas it is still unknown where it came from? Is the Chupacabas a natural animal yet to be discovered? Or a secret genetic experiment accidentally released into the environment.

The Jersey Devil:

The New Jersey Pine Barrens has for hundreds of years been the place where a mysterious beast known only as the Jersey Devil is said to lurk. Stories of the Jersey Devil stretch back as far as the 18th century, maybe even further. One popular tale of how the devil came about is this. Mrs Shrouds of Leeds Point, New Jersey was giving birth on a stormy night back in 1735. Just before the birth she confessed that Satan himself was the father of the child. With great relief from the midwife the baby was born with all the normal features you'd expect from a new-born child. Though soon after, it changed its form into a creature with hooves, a rams head, bat-like wings and a forked tail. The creature then escaped by flying up though the chimney.

A little over 2,000 witnesses have reported seeing the Jersey Devil down the centuries and a flurry of sightings occurred at the turn of the last century. Back in January of 1909, New Jersey was being visited by a unknown creature thought to be the Jersey Devil. One witness E. W. Minister, who was the Postmaster of Bristol, Pennsylvania, just over the border from New Jersey heard a unnatural and disturbing sound coming from the direction of the New Jersey river at 2 o'clock in the morning. He got out of bed to investigate and saw something quite bizarre flying across the night sky. It had a head of a ram, long thin wings, and was emitting a very eerie glow. Just two days later, in Gloucester City, New Jersey, Mrs and Mr Nelson Evans watched the beast for nearly ten minutes perched on their shed roof before it flew off. They described the creature as being 3" feet tall, with a long neck, large bat-like wings, and hooves like a horse.

The Loveland Frog:

Loveland, Ohio, northeast of Cincinnati, has been the place of sightings for these reptilian creatures since the mid-50's. In May 1955 a man driving home at 3:30am had a frightening encounter. He clamed to have watched three bipedal reptilian creatures standing by the side of the road. He pulled over and watched them from his car for about three minutes. One of the frog-like beings carried a bar above its head and sparks were shooting out of the wand type device. The driver notified the Loveland police but no further evidence of the creatures was found after investigation.

Another of these encounters with the Loveland frog happened to decades later in March 1972. A police officer was driving along Riverside road at 1am. Due to the roads being icy he was traveling slowly then noticed something which looked like a dog. When he drove closer the creature suddenly stood up and ran off for the Little Miami River. Later the police officer returned to the scene of the incident with a colleague. He explained to his friend what he saw looked like a highly evolved frog about 4 feet tall with leathery skin. They searched the area but found no sign of the monster except for strange marks in the mud where the creature had slid down into the river.

Two weeks later another policeman reported a very similar incident. Driving down the same road, he saw an animal lying in the middle of the pavement, which he thought, was either dead or dying after being hit by a car.

He got out of the vehicle to clear the animal to the roadside, when suddenly it jumped up and the officer saw that it was a strange frog-like creature. It began limping, as if it were injured, and headed over the guardrail towards the river. The officer took a shot at it but apparently didn't hit it.

A farmer in Loveland also clamed to have seen a frog-like creature in March of 1972. Although the police officers never filed a report on the strange creatures.

Mothmen:

These terrifying beasts that have become known simply as Mothmen have been seen many times over the decades by witnesses from various countries. One of the first recorded incidents involving the Mothmen occurred in the early 1960's in West Virginia, USA. A father and daughter were driving along a road when they saw a tall, man like outline ahead on the road. As they drove closer it became clear to them that it was much larger that any man and had large red piercing eyes. A pair of wings suddenly unfolded nearly blocking the whole of the small road. The pair froze as it took off into the air and flew away. Trembling with pure terror the car sped off with great speed.

It has been said that the Mothmen got their name from this next encounter, which happened in November 1966. This time while still in West Virginia, the event happened near the place of Point Pleasant. Two couples Mr. and Mrs. Scarberry and Mr. and Mrs. Mallette were driving near the dubbed "TNT Area" an old WWII munitions dump at midnight. When they saw what appeared to be a grey figure, about 6ft in height, red piercing eyes, with large wings. The creature seemed to be shuffling towards the door of the plant. They didn't stick around either to ask questions and drove off as quickly as they could. It has to be noted however that while the car reached speeds of over 100mph, the creature spread its wings and flew after the car managing to catch up and keep pace with them and hover above the frightened couples. Casting a huge shadow down on the road, Mrs. Mallette said that it's wingspan was over ten feet, and made a high-pitched squealing sound as it hovered above them.

Sightings continued to escalate until the evening of December 15, 1967. When tragically the Silver Bridge, which crossed the Ohio River in Point Pleasant, collapsed in rush-hour traffic packed with Christmas shoppers. Over forty six people lost their lives that night. It was the biggest bridge disaster in America at that time. Links were made with the Mothman sightings as the cause of the disaster; witnesses came forward saying they had spotted the creature under the bridge just a week before the collapse.

Strangely the Mothman sightings stopped after that fateful day. And no reports of the creature have been reported in Point Pleasant since. The Mothman has become something of an omen of doom because wherever it's sighted, a disaster has soon followed. Sightings of a large giant bird were reported just before the Earthquake in New Mexico, and similar reports of a Mothman-like creature were recorded in Russia days before the Chernobyl accident.

The Beast of Bodmin:

The Express, February 28, 2000

Pumas and leopards have been spotted roaming about the countryside with their young, according to a leading expert. Zoologist Quentin Rose warns that unless something is done, there will be a population explosion of the cats within 20 years. "I would estimate that there are around 100 cats loose in the British countryside and in some of those areas I know there is more than one big cat because they have been breeding," he said.

"People have spotted females with cubs and there have been several sightings of two adults together. These cats are solitary animals and only come together to breed."

He warned that the conditions for big cats in the UK are perfect, since they have no predators, have plenty of cover and food and find the weather to their liking. Most of the cats were kept as exotic pets in the '70s and released into the wild when the Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976 made it illegal to keep them without a licence.

There is a possible threat to humans too. Although Mr Rose stresses that the cats usually leave humans alone unless they are cornered or surprised, there have been eight close, aggressive encounters in recent years.

Mr Rose points out that people may be unaware of the cats as they disguise themselves well. He said: "Large animals can be released into an area and local people remain unaware of them. The cats don't leave many footprints as they don't like treading in mud and they bury their droppings.

"If they attack sheep they just leave the bones and wool, rarely abandoning a kill. Also, the cats enjoy large territories. The females may wander 250 miles and the males up to 600 or 700 miles."

In 1983, Moray, Scotland, after many big cat sightings. A large black cat was shot and killed. In the mid or late 80's an Asian jungle cat found dead by the side of the road after being hit by a car. So is there really a beast wandering the Cornwall countryside? The Beast of Bodmin Moors, Cornwall, England, has been seen by numerous people. The most common description given by witnesses is that of a large puma like cat. So how did such a creature come to be here? There are no wild cats like the puma or leopard native to Britain. Not so long ago a discovery was made in the form of a skull believe to be from the Beast of bodmin or a similar creature. It was found in the River Fowey, Cornwall. The skull had large fangs suggesting that it was not from a domestic cat, nor was it from anything like a fox or badger.
