Introduction:

Welcome to the UFO section of the site. If you want to hear about some of the unusual sightings in the skies that have been occurring all over the world in the past 50 years. Congratulations! You've come to the right place. UFO's are one of the most intriguing mysteries of modern times. Where do they come from? what are they here for? and are they friendly or hostile? There have been thousands of strange sightings of seemingly alien craft all over the world. Plus countless more have presumably gone unreported. Although such sightings have been seen all through the centuries. Modern ufology began in the 1940's when a pilot called Kenneth Arnold observed nine flying craft on the 24th of June 1947. Because the first sightings were made by combat/civilian pilots, men who where not given to hallucination or make-believe. The appearance of these UFO's was taken very seriously by the governments of the time, especially the United States of America as very serious security threats. So is the truth really out there? Read on and decide for yourself.

Kenneth Arnold:

Many people believe that the case of the Kenneth Arnold sightings marks the beginning of the Modern UFO ere. Kenneth Arnold was a civilian pilot and the owner of a fire-control equipment company in Boise,Idaho. In the summer of 1947 on June 24th, Arnold took off from the Chehalis (Washington) airport at around 2pm. In his own single engine plane. He was working for the U.S.A.F looking for a Marine C-46 transport that had crashed in the Cascade mountain range.

After an hour searching for the downed transport, he was stunned to see nine brightly gleaming objects coming south from the direction of Mount Baker. The objects where flying in a echelon formation, with two parallel rows of four and five respectively. He was able to calculate their speed due to his position. He found that all nine objects where traveling at a amazing 1,600mph, which was three times faster than any aircraft available at that time.

Arnold later described the objects as "flat like a pie pan and so shiny they reflected the sun like a mirror." He also commented that they few "like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water,"he said. The strange objects where in view for about three minutes. An interesting postscript was given on July 4th, only 10 days after the sightings made by Kenneth Arnold. Captain E. J. Smith of United Airlines and his co-pilot, Ralph Steven's, they had just taken off from Boise airport. When they noticed a formation of five objects similar to that of the Arnold sighting. After only a minute the five "saucers" sped off at an incredible speed and four more later appeared. Were these the same craft that Kenneth Arnold observed only a few days earlier?

The picture to the right is taken from the cover of Kenneth Arnold's book, The Coming of the Saucers. It depicts what the objects looked like. Although he saw them from a much greater distance than shown here

The Roswell Incident:

This is perhaps the most well know case in UFO history, and after over fifty years is still a mystery. The date was July 2nd 1947, the town of Roswell, New Mexico. It was a typical small American town for the time, and nothing of real importance. Except for the Roswell Army Air Force Base, which was home to the U.S.A.F's only nuclear-armed bomber wing, the 509th Bomber group. But something happened at this small town which changed it forever.

On the night in question several eyewitnesses spotted a bright glowing object screaming across the night sky, during a thunderstorm, and hurtling towards the ground. The craft crashed near rancher William 'Mac' Brazel's farm. The next morning Mac Brazel found a trail of debris running straight through his ranch. He first assumed that it was some form of military jet, but on further inspection of the debris doubts began to grow that it was something else.

He reported the find to the Sheriff's office, and they in turn contacted the Roswell Air Force Base. In response Major Jesse Marcel came with another officer to investigate the crash site. It was soon realised that the debris was not from one of the B-29 bombers, or any other military aircraft. A large number of troops was sent to the ranch to collect the debris. A few miles that same day not far from the debris site, an engineer named Grady Barnett from the town of Socorro found something truly amazing. Laying at the foot of a cliff, was a 'metallic disk-shaped object' which apparently was the source of the debris trail. The ship was about 50 feet across, with a truncated rear section.

The wreckage was soon discovered by a aerial reconnaissance team searching for more debris and was apparently taken away soon afterwards. There are differing reports of the crafts occupants- Barnett said that all the aliens where dead, but other witnesses claim at least one of the beings was still alive but later died in a military hospital. On July 8th the Army reported in the 'Roswell Daily Record' that they had captured a flying saucer, but the statement was soon retracted and claimed that it was really a weather balloon.

This change of statement came from General Roger Ramay, and they even went as far as getting Major Jesse Marcel photographed examining the alleged debris from the balloon crash. This did not dampen down public interest, and stories and rumours were everywhere as to what really happened. A local nurse came forward and told how she was asked to sit in on an autopsy of two of the aliens recovered from the craft. The local undertaker was also questioned by a military source about the availability of small child size coffins. Something further to add are the claims from locals who arrived at the ranch before the military, and described the beings as very small, with spindly bodies. They were also in a bad state of decay due to night time predator's and prolonged exposure to the elements.

The official line of Roswell today is there was a cover-up, but not one to do with aliens. The Military says it was a top secret experiment called 'project Mogul' which was a balloon made to test Soviet nuclear detonations. What really happened that night in Roswell, New Mexico we may never truly know....

The Fireball of Tunguska:

It is not really understood what caused the blast. Was it an exploding comet, or damaged UFO? All have been put forward as possible reasons for the incident. On the 30th of June 1908, at around 7am. Witnesses saw what has now come to be know as the 'Siberian Fireball' or 'Tunguska Blast'.

Witnesses described a glowing blue ball of fire with something that sounded like a sonic explosion. The fireball was also witnessed by the nomadic Mongolian tribe called the Tungus, who populated the surrounding area near the Siberian Tunguska river. As the tribes people looked up at the sky they saw what must have been a terrifying sight. The vast blue fireball streaked across the atmosphere leaving a 500-mile trail of light and smoke. Within seconds the fireball exploded in a desolate region of boglands, 60 miles north of Vanavara.

The resulting fiery explosion could be seen hundreds of miles away and the sheer power of the immense ground tremors shook any nearby persons off their feet with great force. Even up to 370 miles away, south of Kansk. Reports of horses being thrown to the ground, houses shaking at the foundations, and fishermen being swept from their boats. The resulting forest fires which lasted for weeks on end, destroyed more than 625 square miles of land. A Russian scientist called Leonid Kulik was convinced that the Tunguska blast was caused by an errant iron meteorite which was even larger than the one which created the famous Barringer crater in Arizona, USA, around 25,000 years ago.

One thing is for sure. Had the mysterious object arrived just a couple of hours later, and exploded over a densely populated area... the death toll could have been horrific!

Betty and Barney Hill:

Betty and Barney Hill, were an ordinary American couple. In 1964 it was revealed under hypnosis by a Boston psychiatrist, that they had been the subjects of experiments. The Hills claimed that back in 1961 on the night of September 19th, while they were driving back to their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after a holiday in Canada.

They were on U.S Route 3 when they noticed a bright light near the moon that seemed to be increasing in size. They stopped the car and viewed the object through binoculars for a better look, believing it to be an aircraft. The Hills continued their journey home but they noticed that the light was getting closer and closer. As they approached the White Mountains, the object now seemed to be on a parallel course to their car. They drove on, checking every now and then for the mysterious eerie light.

Then near Indian Head it suddenly appeared directly in front of them. Stopping the car and leaving the engine running, Barney got out to investigate the bright object. He viewed it through the binoculars and observed 5-11 humanoid figures moving behind a double row of windows. Betty remained in the car and heard her husband remark "I don't believe it! I don't believe it!" "This can't be happening!

At this time the UFO was now about 70 feet overhead and only 100 feet distant. Betty screamed for him to get back in the car and Barney sped off at great speed. Suddenly the couple heard a strange 'beeping' noise like a tuning fork. The pair became very drowsy and sleepy. They found themselves driving 2 hours later, in Ashland 35 miles south of Indian Head. Feeling very uneasy and puzzled about the missing 2 hours and the whole incident in general, they continued their journey home.

The next day they contacted the Pease Air Force Base and later the National investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) in Washington, D.C. Investigators were sent to document their stories and soon after Betty began to have horrible nightmares. The incident played on both their minds for quite some time. Eventually they went and consulted Dr Benjamin Simon, a Boston psychiatrist who specialised in amnesia and personality disorders through the means of hypnotherapy. They were treated for six months which started in January of 1964. What they revealed under hypnosis was pretty much the same as in Betty's nightmares. A group of 8-10 individuals dressed in black matching uniforms with military style caps. Standing in front of the car and being told that they would not be harmed.

They were led aboard the craft and examined, samples of hair and fingernails were taken. Before being returned to their car and allowed to continue home. It was also mentioned that Betty asked one of the humanoid creatures where they came from. She drew a star-map under hypnosis, which several years later a new investigation revealed new data, data which was not available back in 1961. That showed a cluster of stars, near two new stars called Zeta Reticuli. They were astoundingly close to the star-map drawn by Betty hill.

Travis Walton, Fire In the Sky:

Back on the night of November 5th 1975, in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Park in Arizona. A woodcutting team of seven men where traveling in their truck when they encountered something truly bizarre. They saw what could only be described as a UFO. The men described the object as a red golden light, with a topical saucer shape, and seemingly solid and about 20ft across.

After they had stopped to investigate, Travis Walton shot out of the truck and moved towards the strange craft. The others who where with the vehicle shouted for him to back in. Suddenly Travis was hit by a blue light throwing him backwards. Fearing that he was dead the men drove off in terror. As they entered the nearest town the six remaining woodcutters alerted the authorities.

Three of the men refused to go back up into the woods at night, the rest returned to the scene with the police. Unfortunately no trace of Travis could be found. Travis Walton went missing for five days, during this time each remaining member of the gang took a polygraph test, and there were even allegations of murder. And it was believed that one of the six men which included his brother Duane, had committed the murder.

Then just as suddenly as Travis had disappeared, he reappeared, just outside the nearby town of Snowflake. Dirty, unshaven, and in a state of clear shock. Although he can only remember a fraction of the five days he was missing. He does recall being taken into the UFO and being examined by 'Greys' (click here for more info on the Greys.) Travis took several lie-detector tests these later became a source of great controversy among UFO groups in America.

Even some twenty years later Travis Walton is still trying to remember what happened? A few years back A Hollywood movie called 'Fire in the Sky' was made about his ordeal. But he does admit to most of the movie being elaborated with the bizarre and frightening scenes aboard the spacecraft being fictionalised by Hollywood. The only real true account being the abduction scene at the start of the movie.
